Over the past 20 years, the size of data center has grown from the on-premises data center of 5K servers to a cloud cluster of 100K+ servers. Through network virtualization, more enterprise can place the cloud native application on the servers of Cloud Cluster for better system scalability, less cost investment and simpler maintenance. To optimize computing & storage efficiency, the Cloud native applications will disaggregate the program into multiple microservices and distribute the microservice across different containers in the data center. The distributed services drives the need for more data movement between containers and generates explosive east-west traffic. To facilitate Cloud distribution, data center network simplifies the 3 Tiers network into the Spine-Leaf network and evolves the bandwidth from 10G into 25G/100G even 400GBASE at the corner.

To immigrate from 100GBASE into 400GBASE, the next generation data center will widely use the QSFP28 100G PAM4 Single Lambda optics for ToR/Leaf interconnect. Compared to the legacy QSFP28 100G CWDM4, LR4 optics, QSFP28 100G PAM4 Single Lambda optics no more need mux/demux 4 * 25G NRZ wave into 100G optical path, simplify the structure design of QSFP28 100G optics and cut down the high cost optical components. QSFP28 100G Single Lambda optics uses the legacy 4 * 25G NRZ eletrical signal but add a DSP chip to convert 4 * 25G NRZ into 1 * 100G PAM4 optical signal and can be easily couple into the single lambda wave without difficult wavelength control.  

 

QSFP28 100G PAM4 optics uses one wavelength of 1310nm and enables the interoperation with 400GBASE four parallel 1310nm channel optics via the breakout solution.

 

The Arista compatible QSFP28 100G DR1 Transceivers can be plugged into any Arista 100G QSFP port. The electrical connector interface is 4 * 25G NRZ, the same as all existing legacy QSFP28 100G modules. But, not like 100G CWDM4, mux/demux 4 * 25G NRZ optical signal into one fiber, the QSFP28 100G DR1 Transceivers uses a gearbox chip to convert the 4 * 25G NRZ electrical signals into a 1 * 100G PAM4 optical signal and couple into the single wavelength laser (or "lambda") for transmission. Due to different optical modulation, QSFP28 100G DR1 modules will not interoperate with legacy 100G CWDM4 lite module.

 

The Top-Trans QSFP28 100G PAM4 DR1 optics uses single lambda signal of 50GBaud on 1310nm center wavelength and support the link lengths of up to 500m via G.652 single mode fiber. The Top-Trans QSFP28 100G PAM4 DR1 optics uses PAM4 optical modulation and FEC and is fully compliant with MSA QSFP28 100GBASE-DR.
