40GBASE- PLR4 QSFP+ PSM 1310NM 10KM SMF MTP MPO Optical Transceiver

40GBASE-LR4 Ethernet is now one of the popular architectures for data center interconnects. However, there are two types of transceivers QSFP-40G-LR4 and QSFP-40G-PLR4. 

QSFP-40G-LR4 chooses the sequential transmission, using WDM technology, coupling four independent signal bit flows of 10Gbps and CWDM wavelengths (1271nm, 1291nm, 1311nm, and 1331nm) into a single 40Gbps and 1310NM optical path. LR4 uses 4 uncooled CWDM Lasers and Mux/Demux to support the fiber link of up to 10KM via a dual LC connector, interoperating with 10GBASE-LR CWDM of the corresponding wavelength.

In comparison, QSFP-40G-PLR4 chooses the parallel transmission, using four parallel 1310nm optical paths for each signal bit flow to achieve simultaneous transmission. PLR4 uses a single uncooled CW laser and splits its output power into four integrated silicon modulators to create 4 independent optical paths of 10Gbps for an aggregate data rate of 40Gbps. PLR4 couples the I/O of 8 optical paths into 8 optical single-mode fibers and supports the fiber link up to 10KM via an MPO/MTP connector, interoperating with 10GBASE-LR using MTP/MPO Breakout cables. 

PLR4 is relatively simple in the coupling and cheap in components cost, but because using 8 cores SMF instead of 2 cores SMF, and is not cost-effective for the link of long distances. PLR4 demands a new MPO/MTP cabling system of more expensive investment than conventional LC connectors and regular two core SMF cables. 

Top-Trans QSFP+-40G-PLR4  is a 40GBASE-PLR4 transceiver designed for Data Center Interconnect with a parallel cabling system. It is fully compliant with QSFP MSA and IEEE P802.3ba standards, using 4 parallel DFB lasers and PIN receivers to create four independent optical paths each capable of 10Gbps for the aggregate rate of 40Gbps. It is ideal for the fibre link of 10KM over eight cores single-mode fibre wires with MPO/MTP connectors. With build-in DDM/DOM functions, this module can monitor operation status and diagnose voltage, bias current, RX power, and TX power.
